Most years I try to do a quick, month-long crochet along – but 2023 got away from me! So we’re kicking 2024 off with one featuring a brand new yarn. How the Market Day Cardigan Crochet Along Works
Over the next 3 weeks of January 2024, I will post a section of the Market Day Cardigan crochet pattern. Each post will go live at 10 am Central US time, barring technical difficulties. There will also be a video tutorial for each section, shared in both right and left-handed versions. These posts will be right here on mooglyblog.com, and free for all! On your end, all you need to do is make the pattern – no need to sweat the deadline, take your time!
Right now it’s just sneak peeks – but I can tell you that this is a sleeveless open-front vest, made with 28 – 36 squares (depending on size). The construction is rather unique, and makes a topper that pairs perfectly with everything from jeans to dresses!

The Yarn for the Market Day Cardigan
To make this crochet vest I used new Red Heart All In One Granny Square yarn! I was just as skeptical as you at first – could it really work? And there was definitely a learning curve. However, I’m so glad I kept at it! I do think it’s important to be patient, be willing to “frog it and fix it” here and there, and let go of perfectionism. After all, crochet can only be made by hand, it’s an art!
I went with the Aran-Cream colorway for a neutral look, but this yarn has so many great color options each sweater can be unique! Mix and match them for a custom look, or use another 4-worsted/medium-weight yarn to make your own 6″ granny squares. And before it’s too late, be sure to enter the Red Heart All In One Granny Square Yarn Giveaway!
So How Much Yarn per Size?
The Market Day Cardigan crochet pattern includes 3 sizes. All use the same hook size (more on that below). Be sure to note that this yarn does have a dye lot, and it’s always best to buy a little extra than come up short right at the end! These numbers are best estimates – everyone’s gauge is a little different. I’m finishing up this pattern as I write up this post, so this is currently the best estimate – I’ll have more exact numbers soon, but I did try to err on the side of having a little left over.
XS/S/M: 28 – 39″ bust – 5 skeins
L/XL/2XL: 40 – 51″ bust – 6 skeins
3XL/4XL/5XL: 52 – 62″ bust – 7 skeins
The Hook for the Market Day Cardigan
For the hook, I will be using a Susan Bates US-H, 5.0 mm Twist and Lock hook. However, the most important thing is that you use the hook size that gets you 6″ crochet granny squares after 5 rounds – whatever yarn you are using. The hook size recommended for Red Heart Granny Square yarn is 5.5 mm, and I have to go down one size to get the right gauge. You may very well need to practice with this yarn a bit to figure out what hook size and techniques work best for you. Try a smaller hook if you tend to crochet loosely, or a larger hook if you tend to crochet tightly. Whatever hook size you land on, use that throughout the project.
The Schedule for the Moogly January 2024 Crochet Along
The pattern will be divided into three sections, and each section will be released on the remaining Tuesdays in January 2024, at 10am Central US time.
Here is the Schedule:
1st Part: Project Reveal and Make the Squares – January 17
2nd Part: Assemble and Edge the Squares – January 24
3rd Part: Add the Collar and Hem – January 31.
Remember – there are no deadlines for finishing, and this one is not a race – jump on in when you’re ready, and work at your own pace. You can also use this pattern for a crochet along at your local craft group!
