Can Crochet Solve Every Problem? So far so good!
I love the creativity and endless possibilities of crochet, as well as its practicalities! And one of the things that has always gotten me excited is using crochet to make my home comfier, cozier, and prettier. It makes me so happy, creating designs that solve problems… even when the problem is just an ugly plastic plant pot!
So for International Crochet Month, I decided to tackle one of my personal “pain” points – a lovely hibiscus living its best life in its original plastic pot. This little bush lives outside in the summer, but winters indoors. And it needed an upgrade… but it’s not the season to transplant.
Crochet to the rescue! I’ve made plant cozies before, but I needed something that could be customized to a “non-standard” size. Additionally, I needed to keep the bottom totally open – this plant likes lots of drainage. Challenge accepted!
Create a Completely Custom Crochet Plush Plant Wrap
The Plush Plant Wrap crochet pattern is the result. The structure and design are simple, but it packs a big punch!
The instructions below show you how to customize the size of your Plant Wrap, ensuring a perfect fit for any container – and the buttons mean you can remove and reuse it with ease! And of course, you can use this pattern to wrap up all sorts of containers – in addition to making one for my hibiscus, I took a bit of yarn leftover from another project and wrapped up an old food jar I’m using for one of my monstera cuttings!
The Plush Plant Wrap makes any old container look great, and it adds an inviting bit of texture to the space. The Star Stitch makes another appearance here, and it looks great! Bernat Plush Big makes this project super fast, and gives it a very modern feel. Now I’m excited to share it with all of you, so we can all be happier in our spaces!
Of course, you can use any yarn you have on hand – just use a hook to match your yarn, and follow the free crochet plant pot cover pattern below!

Notes:
This pattern is meant to be completely customizable to your needs. Therefore, specific numbers are not given. Any odd number of stitches works to begin this pattern. You may need to choose between going slightly taller or slightly shorter than your container – which you choose is up to you, and the look you’re going for.
While it is customizable, and a gauge is given, no math beyond counting your stitches is required. The Plush Plant Wrap is made side to side. This means that the width of your first row will be the height of the wrap, and then you’ll work enough rows to wrap around the container. This means that, for the number of rows, too long is better than too short.
For finishing, I used large wooden buttons, sewn to the inside of the wrap. The Jumbo yarn used here leaves holes in the fabric that are the right size to slip the buttons through. If you use a different yarn, be sure to use buttons that fit that fabric. The number of buttons used just depends on how big your wrap is – but 1-3 should do it for most sizes.
Plush Plant Wrap Crochet Pattern Instructions
Set Up: Measure the height and circumference of the container you want to cover, or keep it nearby while you crochet. (Be sure to check sizing before breaking yarn!)
Row 1 [WS]: FSC any odd number of stitches, working to the height of the container; turn.
Row 2 [RS]: CSDC in first st, Beg LSS in next st, ch 1, *LSS in next st, ch 1; rep from * across, LDC in last st; turn. (st count will be the count in Row 1 +1)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across until 2 sts rem, skip the next st, sc in the last st changing to Color B; turn. (same st count as Row 1)
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the piece is long enough to wrap around the container, ending on a Row 3 repeat.
Last Row: Ch 1, sc in each st across; break yarn and finish off.
Finishing: Sew button(s) to the WS of the fabric, behind the Last Row.
Specifics on the Plush Plant Wrap Samples Shown:
For the smaller, Gold wrap, I went with 7 sts and 13 rows, to wrap around an old pickle jar. It measured approximately 6″ x 14″ laid flat, and closed with one button. Less than one skein was used.
For the larger, Off White wrap, I went with 11 sts across and 27 rows, to wrap around a 9″ tall plant pot. It measured approximately 9″ x 33″ laid flat, and closed with two buttons. Less than 3 skeins were used.
