Crocheting the Velvet and Fur Christmas Stocking

Now let’s talk about this stocking! With velvet and fur, it’s a feast for the senses. This luxurious look fits many holiday trends, from boho to luxe. And you can pick from any of the gorgeous colors to make your own custom combo. Customize it further with the Moogly Crochet Alphabet (worked in thread or fine yarn to fit), or traditional embroidery!

Pom poms and special name tags are perfect for personalizing it too! You could even use a bit of wood to make it work with a rustic theme. There’s also a hanger or loop built into the top opening, so it’s ready to fill with gifts! I’m sure you’ll each add your own final awesome touch.

To get this look, the Velvet and Fur Christmas Stocking features two gorgeous yarns – Bernat Baby Velvet and Red Hygge Fur. They are both incredible to touch and full of cozy winter elegance – but they can be a little challenging to work with!

Velvet Yarn Tips

Bernat Baby Velvet - get great tips for working with this yarn on Mooglyblog.com!

The “velvet” yarns are the market are essentially chenille. And chenille doesn’t like to be worked loosely, and it doesn’t like to be washed in the machine. Go for solid fabrics in both crochet and knit – not drape! I would not recommend using to make a standard pompom.

To make any project with Bernat Baby Velvet, it’s important to use a smaller hook size, and close stitches, such as those shown here in the free crochet Christmas Stocking pattern. And luckily, stockings only need occasional spot cleaning!

Fur Yarn Tips

Red Heart Hygge Fur - get great tips for working with this yarn on Mooglyblog.com!

As for working with fur yarns, the biggest challenge is seeing your stitches. It’s important to have good lighting, first and foremost. And while I would normally recommend working over a white cloth, here we are using a luxury dreamy white yarn – so a darker cloth will help you see a bit better. Of course, if you chose a dark grey, medium brown or other deep color, then the lighter cloth works best!

When you are crocheting with Red Heart Hygge Fur, try to feel for each st with you non-hook hand, and pay attention to the spacing between stitches – this will be the best guide. And you may notice I haven’t included a stitch count for that section – the number isn’t important, as long as you’re working “straight-up” from the leg! This faux fur cuff is worth it!
