Is it Easy to Crochet a Christmas Stocking?
It all depends on the pattern! Like anything else, it can be complicated if you want it to be. To make it easier, look for:
- Skill Level: Easy
- Worsted Weight or larger yarn
- Something with minimal color changes
This pattern fits the bill! And it’s a free crochet pattern download on Yarnspirations! Personally, I like to recommend trying a stocking to crocheters who are interested in crocheting socks. An easy crochet stocking pattern is a great intro to turning a heel, and making a toe, without worrying about gauge or making a matching pair!

This Christmas Stocking pattern is great for beginners, made primarily of the single crochet stitch (sc)! There are a few dc stitches in the edging at the cuff and decreases at the toe, but there are no magic circle or other tricky crochet stitches – we work cuff down. The finished size of the stocking is about 16″ long and it uses worsted weight yarn. Pay particular attention to the heel and use those stitch markers and you’ll stay on the right side of Santa this year!
And this pattern is ready for any of your embellishments! Try adding their name or other fun details using surface crochet, or add their initials with the Moogly Crochet Alphabet! Yarnspirations also has a great Crochet Alphabet now too!

I taught this easy crochet stocking pattern for the Michaels Community Classroom, on November 15th, 2022 and below is a recording of that tutorial video. It was designed by the Yarnspirations Design Team! This pattern uses standard abbreviations and US terms.
