One week into July I decided it was time to celebrate National Ice Cream Month with a fun and wearable project: ice cream cone elbow patches. This playful DIY is simple, customizable, and a cheerful way to refresh sweaters and cardigans. I first hinted at this idea in an earlier post, and when I collaborated with Cricut, elbow patches were one of the first designs that came to mind. There are so many possibilities, and these sweet patches are the perfect place to start.

Supplies
Cricut Explore™
Cricut Iron-On in four colors (one for the cone, two for the scoops, one for the cherry)
A sweater (cardigans and fine knits work best, though chunky knits can be used)
Pins
An iron and ironing board

Instructions
1. Open the project in Cricut Design Space and follow the cutting instructions for the iron-on pieces. Once cut, remove the excess iron-on material from the clear liner, leaving the ice cream shapes on the backing. While the machine is cutting, try on your sweater and mark the center of each elbow with a pin.
2. Begin with the cone piece. Position the cone so the design will be centered over the elbow; the cone should sit just below the pin with the liner still on.
3. Iron the cone in place following the iron-on manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Place the bottom scoop so it overlaps the top of the cone slightly, then iron it down.
5. Add the top scoop the same way, overlapping the lower scoop as needed, and iron.
6. Finally, position the cherry on top and press it in place. Allow the patches to cool and check that all edges are securely adhered.

A quick note: these photos were taken before the studio floor was painted, so the background looks a little different now. I hope you enjoy making and wearing these elbow patches—ice cream on your sweater is a fun, unexpected detail that adds personality to everyday pieces. Rock them with confidence; it’s an easy way to make a favorite garment feel new again.
