DIY Mirrored Disco Ball Costume Ideas for Halloween and Parties

Everyone in the studio keeps arguing “NO, THIS ONE IS MY FAVORITE!” whenever we finish a costume, and this disco ball outfit is making a serious case for that top spot. It does require some paper mâché, so it’s one of our more time-intensive projects, but if you made paper mâché in grade school, you can definitely handle this. The payoff is spectacular — just look at the results!

Supplies Needed

36″ balloon; plenty of newspaper; flour and water (for paper mâché paste); holographic bird tape or ribbon (we used about 1½ rolls); scissors; clear tape; sequin trim or silver ribbon; stapler; strong adhesive or hot glue; a silver top and shorts (shorts won’t show much); and disco heels.

Step-by-Step Disco Ball Costume Tutorial

1. Make the paper mâché paste by mixing equal parts flour and water until you have a thick, glue-like consistency. If it’s too thick, add a little water. Tear newspaper into long, thin strips. Inflate the 36″ balloon fully and set it on a box or stand so it won’t roll.
2. Dip each strip into the paste, squeeze off excess with your fingers, and smooth it onto the balloon. Cover the entire balloon with one layer and allow it to dry completely. Repeat until you have four layers total — this ensures the shell is sturdy enough to wear.
3. Once the fourth layer is dry, deflate and remove the balloon. Cut an opening at the top and bottom large enough to step into and move comfortably. The bottom opening should be wider to allow for walking.
4. Cut long strips of holographic ribbon and fringe one side of each strip. Starting at the bottom edge, secure a row of fringe with small pieces of clear tape every few inches. Work your way up the ball, overlapping rows slightly and spacing them about 1/2″ apart until the entire surface is covered.
5. Add straps so the disco ball sits securely on your shoulders. With the costume on, have someone measure the strap length and attach straps to the inside using a stapler, hot glue, or strong tape. Wear a silver top and shorts underneath and finish the look with disco heels.
