DIY Taco Letter Holder Tutorial: Make a Fun Mail Organizer

While experimenting with materials for our Anthropologie event, our operations manager Samantha folded a trinket dish sample into a taco-like shape and suggested we make something out of it. The idea that stuck was a taco letter holder — a playful, functional desk accessory that keeps mail and notes organized. We tested the concept and ended up with the most delightful letter holder to brighten any workspace. If you want a fun, functional accent on your desk, this is the project to try.

Instructions:

  1. Roll out the air-dry clay on freezer or wax paper until it’s about 1/4″ thick. Place a bowl or cookie cutter over the clay and use a plastic knife to cut a circle. Optionally, press an indent about 1/2″ from the edge to mark where the toppings will go.
  2. Roll a thin strip of clay and cut two pieces about 3/4″ wide and long enough to fit along the edge of half the circle. These strips will become the lettuce.
  3. Prop one half of the circle up on a sturdy surface (we used the freezer paper box) and attach the lettuce strip along the guideline. Ruffle the clay while attaching to create lettuce texture. Repeat on the other half. For tomatoes, cut small half-circle pieces from red clay and press them onto the lettuce; add texture with the end of a paintbrush if desired.
  4. To form the taco shape, place the decorated circle between two sturdy supports about 1″ apart so the shell arches. Put a weight or object inside the center to help it keep its shape while drying. Allow to dry completely, which typically takes 24–72 hours depending on humidity and clay thickness.

You asked for more practical DIYs, and this taco letter holder fits the bill while still carrying a Studio DIY sensibility. It’s a cheerful, multitasking piece — it would work equally well as a napkin holder or small mail organizer. Try customizing colors and toppings to match your desk decor.

If you feel like continuing the taco theme, consider making a taco piñata as a larger party project.
