A few weeks ago Jeff and I celebrated our five-year anniversary with a simple, low-cost plan: no gifts, just a day at the beach. I still wanted a small surprise, though, so I came up with a quick, playful idea—printing messages directly onto Post-it notes. I’d been eager to try this technique and figured our anniversary was the perfect occasion. In about half an hour I had the whole thing ready. It’s an easy, charming way to celebrate and would work just as well for birthdays, graduations, or any special day.

What you need:
- Computer and printer
- Plain printer paper
- A stack of Post-it notes
- A font you like
Steps:
- Open a document and type the message you want. Choose a bold, clear font and size the letters so each one will fit on a single Post-it note. Leave adequate spacing between letters so the Post-its won’t overlap.
- Print the page on regular computer paper.
- Carefully stick a Post-it note over each printed letter, aligning the Post-it so it fully covers the character.
- Place the sheet back into your printer, align it according to your printer’s feed, and print the same page again. The letters will transfer onto the Post-it notes.
- Peel the Post-its off the paper and arrange them where you want—on a wall, the fridge, a bathroom mirror, or even on a sheet of kraft paper for a fun banner.

Tips for best results:
- Use a high-contrast, bold font so the printed letters show clearly on colored Post-its.
- Test alignment with one Post-it first to avoid wasting a whole sheet.
- If your printer has a manual feed or tray option, that can make alignment easier.
- Choose neon or bright-colored Post-its for maximum impact in photos and on plain surfaces.
Once the Post-its are printed, they’re simple to arrange and just as easy to remove—no sticky residue if you don’t leave them for too long. This quick DIY delivers a big visual payoff for very little effort and is perfect when you want a thoughtful surprise without a lot of time or expense.
