The moment arrived: the beloved avocado has been transformed into a giant piñata. Oversized and playful, this avocado piñata is a fun centerpiece for Cinco de Mayo parties, backyard fiestas, or any celebration that could use a bit of guac-inspired whimsy. It’s big, dramatic, and surprisingly simple to make with basic papier-mâché techniques. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to walk you through creating your own avocado piñata.

Supplies
- 36″ balloon
- 2 × 12″ balloons
- Paper-mâché paste (mix equal parts flour and water until smooth)
- Newspaper strips
- Cardboard
- Green crepe paper or crepe paper streamers
- Black and brown paint
- White school glue
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors (fringe scissors are helpful)

Note: This project uses papier-mâché and requires 2–3 days to complete because of drying time. The photo tutorial was created for a special project, so the written steps below provide clear instructions.
Steps
- Inflate one 36″ balloon and two 12″ balloons. Tape one 12″ balloon to the 36″ balloon by connecting the tails so the smaller balloon sits where the avocado “pit” will be.
- Apply papier-mâché to form the avocado shell. Dip newspaper strips into the flour-and-water paste, remove excess paste, and lay strips over the top half of each balloon. To join the two balloons, loosely drape strips across the meeting point to form the avocado “neck.” Cover the surface with a first layer, allow it to dry for 24 hours, then add a second and third layer. When fully dry, pop the balloons and remove them—this leaves the hollow back half of the avocado. Paint the inside/back black and let dry. Punch a hole in the top and tie a string for hanging.
- Create the seed by repeating the papier-mâché process on a single 12″ balloon. Cover half the balloon with two layers of papier-mâché, allow to dry, pop the balloon, then paint the seed brown.
- Cut the cardboard base. Place the flat side of the avocado shell onto a large piece of cardboard and trace its perimeter. Cut out the traced shape. Prepare crepe paper fringe by cutting long strips and using scissors to create fringe along one edge. Starting at the bottom of the cardboard cutout, glue rows of crepe paper fringe with white school glue, overlapping each row by about 1/2″ as you work upward until the entire cardboard is covered.
- Assemble the piñata. Apply a line of hot glue to the unfringed edge of the cardboard and adhere the back shell to it, working in small sections. Before sealing the final section, fill the piñata with candy and treats. Finally, glue the seed to the front center of the avocado by running a line of hot glue along its interior edge and pressing it into place.
