Rainbow Easter Egg Decorating Party Ideas for Families and Kids

Rainbow Easter decorations on a table

I recently hosted a small rainbow-themed Easter egg decorating get-together for my family. I pulled most items from around the house and added a few Easter pieces to complete the look. It’s fun and economical to create a festive setting using what you already own, with just a couple of small purchases — like the velvet bunnies we used — to finish the scene.

Below I’ll share how I organized our tablescape, the supplies I used, and simple ideas to help you set up your own colorful egg-decorating gathering.

Use What You Have and Organize by Color

You don’t need matching sets to create a cohesive tablescape. Arrange mismatched items by color and the table will read as intentional and curated. You don’t need every shade of the rainbow — choosing a few dominant colors or tones is enough to tie the look together.

For an egg-decorating party, check your home for these useful items:

  • Baskets to hold eggs
  • Bowls for treats and decorating supplies
  • Cake stands for showing off decorated eggs or desserts
  • Trays to define individual decorating stations
  • Pitchers for drinks
  • Bunny figurines, decorative eggs, and seasonal accents
  • Ribbons in coordinating shades — they help unify neutral pieces
  • Craft supplies like markers, food coloring, Washi tape, and stickers

I also placed a few of our Easter village houses on the table as extra decoration. Grouping similar colors together is an easy way to make everyday objects look intentional.

Color-Coded Decorating Stations

Assigning each family member a color station is a sweet way to make everyone feel special. Guests can still mix colors, but a color-coded setup keeps supplies organized and visually playful.

Items to include at each station:

  • A tray to contain supplies
  • An egg cup to hold the egg being decorated
  • Food coloring and small cups
  • Glitter and sequins
  • Markers and pens
  • Washi tape and stickers
  • A napkin, rag, or washcloth for drying eggs and hands
  • Color-coordinated candies for a little treat
  • Vinegar, hot water, and extra cups for dyeing

Make Simple Easter Bunny Napkins

A sweet and practical touch is the bunny napkin. These are easy to make and look charming on the table.

Fold a napkin in half on the diagonal. Roll the long edge toward the point, then wrap the rolled napkin around a hard-boiled or decorative egg and tie it with a ribbon to create a bunny-like shape.

Dye Eggs Ahead in Rainbow Colors

I dyed eggs ahead of time to use as decor, but you can also let guests dye their own. Providing a simple color formula or guide helps everyone make the shade they want.

If you prepare dyed eggs in advance, present them grouped by color in baskets to form a colorful centerpiece.

Assembling the Rainbow

Survey your items and notice any color patterns emerging. Group objects into those color families and fill gaps with food, drinks, or small decor pieces to enhance the palette. Arrange items in a gradient from one color to the next and vary heights to keep the display visually balanced.

If you plan to serve food later, place the plates, serving ware, or empty cake stands on the table now so you can ensure there’s space reserved for them.

Food Ideas for an Egg Decorating Party

Use food as part of the decor when space is limited. A store-bought cake topped with a few dyed eggs made a lovely anchor for our table, for example. Other pretty, easy options include:

  • Simple layered cakes or cupcakes topped with dyed eggs or candy
  • Bowls filled with colorful Easter candies
  • Sweet rolls or breads topped with sprinkles
  • Small desserts that double as decor, like themed cookies or mini tarts
