How to Make Fresh Flower Crowns for Parties

It’s birthday week! Even though the actual day isn’t until Friday, I’m celebrating early with a few of my favorite P’s: piñatas, peonies and party hats. Today’s project combines two of those—party hats and peonies—into a playful, elegant take on a flower crown. Think tall, painted stripes topped with a lush peony. It’s bold, colorful and perfectly suited for a garden party that wants to feel a little regal.

Fresh Flower Crowns DIY Supplies

Supplies:
Crown Template (print and cut; the template creates a 9.5″ tall statement crown)
Watercolor paper or matte poster board (matte poster board works well)
Watercolors and a selection of paintbrushes
Water
Double-stick tape
Hot glue gun
Hole punch (optional)
Ribbon
Fresh flowers (peonies recommended)

Instructions:
1. Print the crown template and align pieces A and B, taping the sides together. Use the assembled template to trace and cut your crown shape from watercolor paper or poster board.
2. Test color combinations on a scrap of paper, then paint stripes of varying widths down the crown. Play with color and spacing until you like the look.
3. Let the paint dry completely before handling the crown.
4. Apply double-stick tape to the flap that extends beyond the crown edge, form the crown, and secure the sides together. Alternatively, use tape or glue for a firmer hold.
5. Choose your flower or flowers and trim the stems very close to each bloom. Use a hot glue gun to attach the bloom(s) to the crown and allow the glue to set.
6. If you want a ribbon tie, punch a hole on each side of the crown and thread ribbon through, or simply attach ribbon to the inside with tape or glue.

Tips:
– Use bold, contrasting stripes for a more graphic look, or soft, blended washes for a delicate feel.
– Trim flower stems as short as possible before gluing to keep the crown comfortable to wear.
– If you plan to wear the crown for several hours, consider securing the flowers with floral wire in addition to hot glue for extra stability.
