Make a Donut Purse: DIY Sewing Tutorial for Cute Accessories

Donut bag and craft materials

It wouldn’t be donut week without a cheerful pink donut accessory project. I noticed these round purses everywhere and decided to turn one into a donut — and it’s a no-sew project, so it’s quick and fun to make. Follow these steps to transform a simple round purse into a frosted donut with colorful sprinkles.

Supplies:
Round purse (use a simple circular purse in the size you prefer)
Vinyl in tan (for the donut base), light pink or another frosting color, and several contrasting colors for sprinkles
Transfer tape
Spray adhesive formulated for vinyl
Rubber cement (for small embellishments)
Scissors or a cutting machine
Masking or painter’s tape

Instructions:

1. Cut two vinyl pieces: a tan circle about 1″ smaller than the purse diameter and a frosting piece slightly smaller than that circle with a wavy edge to mimic real frosting. Cut a small circle from the center of each piece to create the donut hole.

2. Use the excess vinyl from the frosting cut as a stencil. Apply transfer tape over the excess vinyl, lift it, and position it centered over the tan circle to mark the frosting area.

3. Following the adhesive manufacturer’s directions, spray adhesive on both the frosting piece and the outlined area on the tan circle. Align and press the frosting onto the tan circle using the transferred stencil as your guide, then remove the stencil to reveal the frosted donut layer.

4. Protect the edges of the purse with masking or painter’s tape. Position the small circular piece cut from the frosting in the center of the purse and spray it with adhesive. Also spray the back of the completed donut vinyl piece.

5. Carefully adhere the donut to the purse. For best results, place the purse on a firm surface and smooth the vinyl down firmly — one hand inside the purse and one outside — to remove any air pockets and ensure a secure bond.

6. Cut sprinkle shapes from various vinyl colors. Apply a thin layer of rubber cement to each sprinkle and to the corresponding spot on the frosting, then press them into place. Repeat until you have the desired sprinkle coverage. Allow adhesive to cure fully according to the product instructions.
