There’s endless debate online about when National Pancake Day falls — I’ve seen September, February, March. Pancakes are worth celebrating any day, but since one observance lands on March 3rd, it’s the perfect excuse for a pancake party. Make it fun with pancake drink stirrers. They’re simple, playful, and made from round foam makeup sponges. Raid a makeup kit or pick some up at a drugstore and get creative.

Follow these steps for a quick, charming DIY project.

Supplies:
Round foam makeup sponges
Craft paint and a paintbrush (spray paint works if you’re making many)
Scissors
Bamboo skewers

How to make pancake drink stirrers:
1. Trim the top and bottom edges of each round sponge to soften the shape and create a more pancake-like profile. From one sponge, cut several small squares to serve as “butter.”
2. Paint the round pieces a warm pancake color and paint the small squares a buttery yellow. Allow the paint to dry completely.
3. Pierce a bamboo skewer through one painted sponge, then add one or two more sponges to create a short stack.
4. Place a yellow square on the tip of the skewer to act as a pat of butter. If needed, secure it with a small dab of glue.
