Studio DIY at the Madonna Inn: Colorful Wedding & Party Ideas

Our first overnight stop on the road trip last month was unforgettable: a stay at the one-and-only Madonna Inn. This iconic San Luis Obispo hotel is a full-on pink fantasy—over one hundred individually themed rooms, each with its own personality. From flooring and furnishings to the tennis courts and even receipts, pink is everywhere. If you love bold, whimsical design, the Madonna Inn is a must-see.

Each room at the Madonna Inn is distinct and even receives a postcard at check-in showing its name and style. Themes vary widely—some rooms embrace safari motifs, others focus on a color palette, and a few incorporate natural stone walls. There are even rooms with glittered pink walls. The hotel was opened in 1958 by Alex and Phyllis Madonna, who designed each space to be unique, creating a destination that feels like a collection of miniature adventures. We stayed in the Merry room and loved it. Other intriguing room names to consider for a future visit include Carin, Canary Cottage, Love Nest, Sugar & Spice, and Tall & Short.

Pro tip: If you want a specific room, call the hotel to reserve it—online requests are not guaranteed. Calling in advance is the only way to be certain of getting the room you want; popular rooms can book months ahead. The staff are helpful about suggesting similar rooms if your first choice is taken. Booking a package can offer good value—some include a signature Madonna Inn water bottle and other perks.

The main building houses a steakhouse, a diner-style café, a bakery, and multiple gift shops. Everywhere you look there are floral motifs, bright colors, and plenty of theatrical details. The bakery is known for its pink champagne cake topped with pink chocolate curls—an over-the-top treat worth trying. If you prefer a wider dining scene, the nearby town of San Luis Obispo has many great restaurant options. The gift shops sell colorful goblets and other quirky finds—you’ll notice the restaurant serves drinks in those same goblets. Evenings often bring live music and dancing in the main room, adding to the retro, celebratory vibe.

One of the most memorable features is the pink tennis courts—yes, they’re actually pink. Even if tennis isn’t your thing, the courts make a great spot for photos and relaxing in the sun. The hotel gift shop offers a range of apparel and décor, and it’s easy to walk away with something that perfectly matches the property’s cheerful aesthetic.

The grounds beyond the main building are equally vivid. The hilltop structure where many rooms are located features colored doors, a color-blocked wall, and rainbow patio chairs. Pink umbrellas, street lamps, and whimsical details dot the property. You’ll even spot horses on the grounds—though not pink, they add to the charming scene. A stroll around the property is entertaining even for visitors who aren’t staying overnight.

Have you visited the Madonna Inn? Which room did you stay in, or which would you pick? If you haven’t been, browse the room photos when you have a few spare minutes—you’ll find it to be an entertaining, nostalgic experience. We left thinking how magical it would be to bring kids someday; imagine a child’s reaction to a glitter room. One guest jokingly described the vibe as “American Horror Story: Barbie Dream House,” which made us laugh. In any case, the Madonna Inn is a joyful, eccentric escape that’s well worth the visit.
