Knit A Linen Stitch Shawl Today – Gadarene – Expression Fiber Arts | A Positive Twist on Yarn

Gadarene was designed by Janica York Carter. When asked about her pattern, Janica said, “When I first saw the Adventurous Hues Kit and its inspiration photo, I immediately thought of dear Bilbo Baggins, J.R.R. Tolkien’s hobbit who stoutly refused the wizard Gandalf’s initial request because adventures ‘make you late for dinner.’ But Bilbo has a change of heart when the adventuring party leaves without him. In a gadarene rush to catch up, he proclaims that he is ‘going on an adventure.’ I suppose most hobbits are more likely to enjoy quiet evenings at home, perhaps working yarn into something cozy.”

“I hope this shawl captures the gentle homeyness, as well as the indomitable spirit hobbits portray in Tolkien’s stories. Linen stitch showcases the subtleties of hand-dyed yarn in a fabric that resembles weaving. If you’ve never worked linen stitch before, begin your stitching adventure with a garter tab, and work simple increases at the outer edges, center, and two additional spines to create a shape that hugs your shoulders.”

This Adventurous Beginner level pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include garter tab cast on and linen stitch.

Gadarene is knitted with our sumptuous Pearlescent Fingering yarn, which is a stunning, single-ply, luxury blend of 50% Superwash Merino Wool and 50% Mulberry Silk. A dreamy, creamy yarn that is ideal for shawls and scarves, as well as other accessories and even sweaters. So amazingly soft with a lovely drape and a subtle shimmer from the silk! The colors truly appear to be iridescent and otherworldly! (550 yds/503 m per 4 oz/113 g skein).

The sample shown here was knitted with our Adventurous Hues Pearlescent Fingering Kit and used approximately 1,475 yds / 1,349 m total: Color A 131 yds / 120 m, Color B 229 yds / 209 m, Color C 195 yds / 178 m, Color D 248 yds / 227 m, Color E 307 yds / 281 m, and Color F 365 yds / 334 m.
