How to Make a Cactus Floppy Hat: DIY Sewing Tutorial

Cactus hat

Summer isn’t complete without a floppy hat project. After our donut and watermelon versions, this year we made a cactus floppy hat — no paint required, just yarn and pom-poms. It’s quick, playful, and can be finished in under an hour.

DIY Cactus Floppy Hat

Total Time: 45 Minutes

Supplies

– Green floppy hat
– White yarn
– Colorful yarn for pom-poms (we used pink, orange, yellow)
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
– Pom-pom maker(s) — using multiple sizes adds variety

Directions

  1. Cut about thirty 4-inch lengths of white yarn.
  2. Thread one piece onto a yarn needle (no knot) and make a single stitch through the brim of the hat.
  3. Remove the needle, bring the two yarn ends together and tie a knot close to the hat. Tie a second knot to secure it firmly. Repeat until the brim is covered to your liking.
  4. Make the pom-poms following the instructions for your pom-pom maker. Wrap the maker as full as possible for a dense pom-pom. Use three sizes for visual interest if you like.
  5. Use the long tying strings from each pom-pom and thread them through the yarn needle. Stitch from the front of the hat to the back with one string, then repeat with the other string. Tie the two ends together on the inside of the hat to secure the pom-pom. Repeat for the remaining pom-poms.
