Each year we assemble a cheerful holiday package to send to friends and people who helped make Studio DIY what it is. We always include a handmade ornament that reflects a theme from the year. In the past we made party hats, donuts, emojis, and this year we went with fries. After the success of our fries costume, these DIY french fry ornaments felt like the perfect, playful gift for your friends to hang on their tree.
I love the idea of exchanging ornaments with friends each year. Ready to make some?

Supplies:
- 1/2″ thick upholstery foam (or 1″ foam cut in half). If you only need a small amount, check a local craft or fabric store for scraps.
- Yellow paint and a paintbrush
- French fry containers (use a template and trace onto red cardstock)
- Baker’s twine
- Hole punch
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun

How to make the ornaments:
- Cut a strip of upholstery foam about 1/2 inch wide. Slice the long strip into fries of varying lengths. You’ll need roughly 10–12 fries per container, depending on the size you cut. Paint all the fries yellow and let them dry completely.
- Punch a hole in the upper back of the fry container and thread a piece of baker’s twine about six inches long through it. Tie a knot so the ornament can hang.
- Apply hot glue to the bottom inside of the container.
- Quickly place the fries into the container so the bases attach to the glue. Arrange larger fries toward the back and smaller ones near the front for a natural look. Let the glue set, and the ornament is ready.
