Make Your Own Ransom Note Balloons for Spooky Party Decor

Fresh off our popular ransom note manicure, we created ransom note balloons — a playful, lightweight way to add typographic flair to party décor. The trick is using thin magazine paper so the letters won’t weigh the balloon down. You can spell out messages, names, or funny phrases without affecting float time. It’s simple, fast, and endlessly customizable.

Total Time: 30–45 minutes

Supplies

Magazines
Scissors
Glue stick
Mylar balloons
String or ribbon
Helium

Directions

1. Decide on the phrases or words you want to display. Flip through magazines and cut out letters or words, trimming each selection into a neat rectangle.
2. Arrange the cutouts on an uninflated balloon to check spacing and alignment. Keep the layout at least four to five inches away from the balloon edge to avoid stretching issues once inflated.
3. Use a glue stick to adhere each piece to the balloon. Press gently and let the glue dry so the paper sits flat.
4. Inflate the balloon with helium and secure with ribbon or string. Adjust placement if needed and display.

I’m tempted to cover everything in ransom-note letters now — it’s addictive. A floating “Cake Happens” balloon would brighten any desk.
