We spent a few relaxed days on Coronado Island over the weekend. Although we’ve traveled a lot with Arlo, our trips were usually work-related or with friends and family. This time we wanted a short getaway just the three of us, and we were thrilled when The Hotel Del Coronado invited us. We ended up spending most of our stay on the property — eating, lounging by the pool, and playing on the beach — and it felt wonderful to have real quality time together. Below are a few favorite moments from our trip.
Best of all, Arlo discovered a love for the beach. On a previous trip to Florida he wasn’t too keen, but this time he dug in the sand, hid treasures, and excitedly pointed to the ocean saying “Gua” (his word for water). Watching him enjoy the shoreline was a highlight of the trip.
The hotel is very family-friendly, offering plenty of activities for kids. In our cabana by the pool they even provided a pack ’n play so Arlo could nap, which gave us a rare couple of quiet hours to truly relax by the water. That felt like the biggest parenting win of our lives.
One of the funniest moments was convincing Jeff to rent a Surrey bike. We rode through the neighborhood around the hotel and Arlo loved it so much he cried when we had to return it. Surprisingly, he also enjoyed wearing a helmet — which is impressive given he won’t keep a hat on for more than a fraction of a second. I tried to swap a hat in for the helmet when we stopped, but that didn’t work. It was all part of the fun.
We also treated Arlo to a breakfast buffet for the first time. Mornings were cool enough to enjoy a sweatshirt, which made the relaxed breakfasts even more pleasant. For dinner, the pizza at Eno—on the hotel property—was a delicious and easy option.
