Hooray! Today we’re thrilled to introduce the Studio DIY x Modernica Confetti Chair. We’ve long been fans of Modernica’s handcrafted fiberglass chairs and our collection includes several in a favorite bubblegum pink. Now, in collaboration with Modernica, we created a limited edition confetti chair finished with a Studio DIY pink base.
Because Modernica’s factory is local to Los Angeles, we had the chance to visit and watch the process up close — and I even got to sprinkle confetti onto several shells during production. The result is a playful, colorful chair that blends classic mid-century design with celebratory detail.
The fiberglass shell chairs date back to designs produced between the 1950s and 1980s. In 2000, Modernica acquired the original presses and tooling, and since then they’ve been recreating each shell by hand. Watching the artisans work was fascinating — many of the factory team have decades of experience and can judge thickness, finish, and detail at a glance before the final resin is applied.
Below is a short overview of the production stages we witnessed.
Early in the process the fiberglass pre-form takes shape. This is where we added confetti to the shell before it moved into the press. The confetti used for the chairs was provided by a specialty supplier and becomes embedded under the resin, creating a durable, festive finish.
After the confetti is applied, the pre-form goes into the press and resin is poured. The press distributes the resin across the entire form, sealing the confetti beneath a smooth, glossy surface. Once the press opens and the piece is removed, the shell is left to cool and cure.
At this stage the chair is recognizable — a confetti-speckled shell ready for finishing touches and mounting. When the shell has cooled and cured, it receives its base. For our limited edition, we opted for a bubblegum-pink Eiffel-style base that complements the colorful dots on the shell.
We selected a vibrant bubblegum pink for the legs because it enhances the playful aesthetic, though the chair is also available with yellow or orange bases. The finished piece feels both classic and joyful — perfect for adding personality to a home or office.
