DIY Honeycomb Balloon Toppers: Create Festive Gift Decorations

I posted this photo on Instagram while packing my mom’s birthday gift (it’s her birthday today — happy birthday, Mom!), and you all loved it. So here’s a clear, friendly guide for making these adorable honeycomb balloon gift toppers. I originally made honeycomb balloon garlands and had a few extras that inspired these toppers. They’re simple to make, reusable as decor, and perfect for kids’ presents or for dressing up an adult gift. Imagine a huge present covered in them — so cute.

How To Make Honeycomb Balloon Gift Toppers

Supplies:

  • Honeycomb paper or 5″ pre-made honeycomb balls (this tutorial shows how to use honeycomb paper)
  • Cardstock
  • Twine
  • Gift tags
  • Scissors
  • Double-stick tape (removable if you want to reuse the topper)
  • Pencil
  • Stapler

Step 1: Draw the Shape — On your honeycomb paper, sketch a balloon shape with the honeycomb glue lines running horizontally. Add two small tabs to the flat side of the shape; these tabs will be used to staple the pieces together. Cut out two identical honeycomb balloon shapes.

Step 2: Add Cardstock Backing — Cut two half-circle cardstock pieces about 1/4″ smaller than each honeycomb balloon. These provide stability and a clean edge once the honeycomb is opened.

Step 3: Assemble the Honeycomb — Use double-stick tape to attach the two honeycomb paper shapes together along the center. Fold the honeycomb closed and staple the tabs you added earlier to secure the two sides. If you forgot to add tabs, you can secure the inside seam with a bit of tape instead.

Step 4: Attach the Cardstock — Stick one cardstock half-circle to each flat side of the honeycomb using double-stick tape. This hides the seam and gives the topper a finished look.

Step 5: Add the String — Tape a piece of twine to the bottom of the honeycomb to serve as the balloon string. Position the topper on the gift and secure one side to the package with double-stick tape. Open the honeycomb halfway and tape down the other side so the balloon holds its three-dimensional shape. Removable double-stick tape works well if you want the topper to be easily taken off and reused.

Step 6: Finish with a Tag — Tie a gift tag to the free end of the twine and tape the tag onto the package so the string looks like the tail of the balloon. That’s it — ready to present.
