DIY Strawberry Costume Ideas for Adults & Kids

A woman in a strawberry costume

A little late but still fun—after the pineapple costume was such a hit, I had several requests for more fruit-inspired outfits. I listened, and here’s a quick, easy DIY strawberry costume you can make with a red dress, some paper, and basic craft supplies. It’s perfect to pair with a friend dressed as a pineapple!

How to Make a Strawberry Costume

Follow these steps to create the strawberry hat and decorate the dress:

  1. Cut several leaf shapes from green poster board or cardstock using the template. Cut a 3″ slit at the base of each leaf.
  2. Overlap the edges of each slit to form a curved leaf. Secure the overlap with a small bead of hot glue.
  3. Shape each leaf by gently running your fingers along the surface to create natural curves.
  4. Prepare the hat base: poke a hole on each side of the cup (or box). Thread a length of ribbon through each hole, knotting the ends inside to secure. The ribbons will tie under your chin or behind your head.
  5. Start gluing the leaves to the cup beginning at the front center. Attach leaves one by one, slightly overlapping, and work your way around the cup until it’s fully covered.
  6. Cut a tall stem shape from green poster board. Fold about 1.5″ at the bottom to form a tab and glue it to the top of the cup. If the stem feels floppy, glue a narrow strip of poster board from the stem down to the cup, letting it curve slightly to support and stabilize the stem.
  7. Decorate the dress by cutting teardrop shapes from adhesive white felt to serve as seeds. Stick them to the dress in a scattered pattern. If the adhesive doesn’t hold well to your fabric, either hot glue the pieces (permanent) or hand-stitch them on so they can be removed later.
