These sweet heart tassel charms were born when I had to wait four hours at the new studio for the gas to be turned on — no internet, no furniture, and nothing to do. I rummaged through my car, found the supplies I needed, and made these on the spot. They’re quick and simple to assemble, require no sewing machine, and make charming gifts for Galentine’s, Valentine’s Day, or as a cute decoration for a child’s door.

DIY Conversation Heart Tassel Charms
Total Time: Less Than 1 Hour
Supplies
One sheet of felt
One sheet of contrasting felt (for letters, optional)
Embroidery floss to match the felt
Yarn in one or two colors
Stuffing or fiberfill
Pom pom maker (or pre-made pom poms)
Large embroidery or yarn needle
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Directions
1. Fold a sheet of felt in half and cut out a heart shape through both layers so you have two matching heart pieces.
2. Use a blanket stitch around the edge of the heart, leaving about a two-inch opening for stuffing.
3. Fill the heart with stuffing to your preferred firmness, then finish the blanket stitch to close the opening.
4. Make a small pom pom about 1.5–2 inches using your pom pom maker, or use a pre-made pom pom.
5. Create a tassel by wrapping yarn around a piece of cardboard or between your hand and elbow until it reaches the desired thickness. Slip the loops off, tie a small piece of yarn around the center, fold the bundle in half, then trim the ends evenly.
6. Thread embroidery floss onto a needle and stitch up through the center of the tassel, through the pom pom, and into the bottom of the heart. Secure with a knot and trim any excess thread.
7. Cut letters from the contrasting felt to spell your chosen phrase and attach them to the heart with hot glue.
8. Add a small loop of yarn to the top of the heart by stitching or threading it through and tying a knot. This creates a hanger for your charm.

I’ve hung a few of these in Arlo’s room — I’m keeping Valentine’s decor simple this year compared with the holiday season, but these add a sweet touch. If you try them, send a photo so I can see and share your creations!
