DIY Fringe Mylar Cake Toppers: Step-by-Step Guide & Ideas

These look familiar — total cheater, I know! After the huge love for the DIY mylar fringe poms, I made a mini version for cake toppers. I also needed an excuse to bake a chocolate cake, so naturally these ended up on top. They look adorable clustered on a large cake or perched individually on cupcakes — or both if you like to go all out.

Supplies:

Mylar tissue sheets
Scissors
Embroidery floss (choose a color that complements your mylar)
Bamboo skewers
Hot glue

To make each mini pom, cut three rectangles of mylar about 15″ by 4″ each. Stack the three pieces, fold the stack in half lengthwise, then fold it again widthwise.

Cut fringe along the long edge, leaving about 1/4″ uncut at the top so the pieces stay connected. Carefully open the layered fringe so it lies flat.

Next, fold the piece in half width-wise, then fold it in half again width-wise. Use a piece of embroidery floss to tie the middle of the folded fringe tightly.

Gently separate the individual fringe strips, pulling them apart one by one to create volume. A few minor rips are fine — they won’t be noticeable once the pom is fluffed. If you see gaps, you probably missed some strands; go back and tease them apart to fill the pom evenly.

When the pom is evenly fluffed, you can string several for a mini garland or turn them into toppers. To make a topper, spread the fringe slightly so there’s a central, solid spot. Add a dot of hot glue to that spot and press a bamboo skewer (cut to the desired length beforehand) into the center. Hold until the glue sets and the skewer feels secure.

Have fun arranging the toppers — mix sizes, colors, and placements to create a playful display. They work equally well on cakes and cupcakes, or both for maximum impact.

What’s your favorite way to use these? I tested several layouts and had a blast. Time to eat cake! For the chocolate cake I made, I used a favorite recipe and a rich chocolate frosting — they were excellent together.
