DIY Heart Streamers: Quick Guide to Festive Valentine Decorations

Valentine’s Day is just a week away, and this DIY couldn’t be easier: heart streamers made from crepe paper. No special tools required—just streamers, a pencil, and scissors. These heart garlands are perfect for classroom parties, decorating chairs for a surprise breakfast, or adding a festive touch to any room.

Instructions

1. Cut a length of streamer to the size you want. Short pieces are easiest to work with; avoid folding extremely long lengths since thicker stacks are harder to cut through cleanly. The examples shown use hearts about 2 1/4″ wide; the smaller garland uses hearts about 1 1/4″ wide.

2. Fold the streamer back and forth in an accordion (fan) fold. Each fold should match the width you want for one heart so the repeated shape lines up when you cut.

3. On the top layer, lightly draw a heart that spans the folded edges. Make sure the sides of the heart extend past the folded edges but leave a small uncut gap along the fold—about 1/2″ on each side in these photos. Those uncut gaps keep each heart connected to the next like paper dolls.

4. With the folds held neatly together, cut through all layers following your heart outline. Be careful not to cut the small gaps on the fold. Unfold the streamer to reveal a chain of connected hearts.

5. That’s it—unfold and admire your heart garland.

Tips and Variations

– Mix colors and sizes: Layer different colored streamers or alternate large and small hearts for visual interest.
– Try different shapes: You can adapt the same folding and cutting method to make scalloped edges, circles, or custom silhouettes.
– Hanging ideas: Use small pieces of masking tape or washi tape to attach the garlands to chairs, door frames, mantels, or walls. They’re lightweight and easy to reposition.
– Party use: Make several strands to drape across a classroom, dining table, or photo backdrop for a festive display.
