Make This Costume From Your Closet!
If you need a quick costume idea, this one delivers. A plain red or yellow outfit becomes a ketchup or mustard costume with a simple handmade hat. The idea works for all ages — kids, teens, and adults — and can easily be adapted to different sizes.
Start with a red or yellow base outfit. Here are some easy options if you don’t already own one:
Red Outfit Ideas
- Red sweatsuit
- Red t-shirt
- Red dress
- Kids red shirt
Yellow Outfit Ideas
- Yellow sweatsuit
- Yellow dress
- Yellow t-shirt
- Kids yellow shirt
Supplies Needed
- Red or yellow dress or outfit
- 8″ pie tin
- Red or yellow paint and a paintbrush
- Red or yellow card stock
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Headband
Step-by-Step Tutorial
The costume is built from two main pieces: a colorful outfit and a simple cone hat made from a painted pie tin and card stock. Follow these steps to make the hat:
- Paint the pie tin red or yellow and allow it to dry completely.

- From the card stock, cut a 1″ strip, a 5″ circle, and a cone-shaped section.

- Bring the ends of the 1″ strip together to form a 5″ wide ring and glue the seam. Trim any excess. Glue the 5″ circle on top of the ring.

- Roll the cone-shaped card stock into a cone and secure it with hot glue.
- Hot glue the ring and circle assembly to the inside of the painted pie tin, then attach the cone on top of the circle so it sits upright.
- Hot glue a headband to the bottom rim of the pie tin so the hat can be worn comfortably.

- Put on the hat with a matching red or yellow outfit, and you’re ready to go.
