DIY Plush Reindeer Head Tutorial: Make a Soft Wall-Mounted Decor

Pink decor

I like to create Christmas decorations we can reuse year after year. We already have a Christmas village and now a plush reindeer head to add to our holiday decor.

If you enjoy sewing, follow the pattern and simple tutorial below to make your own plush reindeer head. It comes together easily and you could even hand-sew the entire project if you prefer.

Equipment

  • Sewing machine (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Needle & thread
  • Pins

Materials

  • Reindeer pattern (print and use to cut pieces)
  • 4 sheets pink felt (head and large ear shapes)
  • 2 sheets white felt (inner ear and antlers)
  • Pink and white embroidery floss (for blanket stitch)
  • Stuffing
  • Pom pom for the nose

Instructions

  1. Cut out all pattern pieces from your chosen felt colors. Use light pink for the head pieces and outer ear shapes, and white for the inner ear and antlers.
  2. Begin with the ears. Place the inner ear on the outer ear and attach with a blanket stitch using embroidery floss.
  3. With right sides facing out, blanket stitch the front and back of each ear together, leaving the bottom open. Add a small amount of stuffing to give the ears dimension.
  4. Assemble the antlers by blanket stitching front and back pieces together, leaving the base open. Stuff lightly so the antlers hold their shape.
  5. Stitch the neck seam of the two main head pieces together with a 1/2″ seam allowance, following your pattern placement.
  6. Pin the center head piece to the stitched head, aligning the seams. Position an ear and antler on each side where indicated by the pattern, then sew the center piece through all layers to secure them in place.
  7. Fold the small rectangle for the hanging loop in half lengthwise and sew with a 1/4″ seam. You can turn it right side out or leave it as is. This will be the hanging hook.
  8. Pin both ends of the hook to the top back of the head. Pin the back piece in place and stitch around, leaving a few inches open to turn and stuff.
  9. Turn the head right side out and stuff firmly but not overfull so it keeps a rounded shape.
  10. Hand-stitch the opening closed. If ears or antlers need extra positioning, tack them in place so they stand as you like.
  11. Sew the pom pom to the nose area by hand to finish the face.
