I’ve mentioned my pineapple obsession before, and now I’m extending that to strawberries—consider yourself warned. This is the first of several summery, fruit-inspired DIYs I have lined up, and I couldn’t think of a better way to start than with tiny party hats. I’ve been eyeing paper cone cups from my favorite packaging supplier, Garnish, for a long time because to me they instantly read “mini party hats.” When Garnish wanted to collaborate, the timing was perfect: fruit-inspired mini party hats it was.

I like to call these “picnic ready” party hats. They’re perfect for cute picnics in the park—you should always wear a party hat to a picnic—and for fruit-themed birthday parties. Bella agrees.

Besides being adorable, these cones are budget-friendly and already shaped like hats, which saves a step in the hat-making process. Any leftover cones can even be used for snow cones—another win.

Supplies:
Paper cone cups
Craft paint in red, yellow and black
Paintbrushes
Green crepe paper (doublette or regular)
Scissors
Tape
Elastic or ribbon
Awl (optional)
Begin by trimming the top of each paper cone to create an opening for the leaves. Paint the cones the colors you want and allow them to dry. Don’t forget to paint the rim for a polished look.

For the strawberry look, use a very small brush and black paint to add upside-down teardrop shapes randomly around the cone. For the pineapple, paint small black dots and then surround each dot with a rough triangular shape to mimic pineapple texture. Work around the cone and move upward, making the triangle shapes gradually smaller as you go.

While the paint dries, make the leaves. For strawberry leaves cut a piece of green crepe paper about 8.5″ by 4″. For pineapple leaves, start with about 8.5″ by 5″. Fold the crepe so you have a 1/2″ wide section and cut a point at one end to form the leaf shapes, beginning roughly three-quarters of the way down the strip.

Unfold the cut crepe paper and roll it tightly from the pointed end toward the base. Secure the bottom with a small piece of tape, then gently pull each leaf outward from the center to separate them.

For strawberry crowns, pull the outer leaves out wider so they lie almost horizontal. For pineapple crowns, leave the leaves a bit more upright. Slide the base of the leaf cluster into the top of the cone. If the fit is loose, secure the leaves inside the cone with a small piece of tape.

To finish, add elastic or ribbon so the hats can be worn. You can tape ribbon inside on each side or use an awl to make small holes, thread elastic or ribbon through, and knot it securely.

Pack them into a picnic basket and head to the park for a tiny picnic party. These petite hats are especially sweet for small children and make any outdoor celebration feel extra special.

Happy summer!
