How to Make a Vertical Fringe Garland for Party Decor

It’s fringe time for this week’s second DIY project from Kellyn’s rainbow birthday party! This simple vertical fringe garland is short, colorful and perfect as a backdrop or dangling from a party sign. It pairs beautifully with a larger fringe garland for layered texture — you can never have too much fringe at a celebration.

Supply list:

  • Tissue paper (four full sheets per garland; larger sheets work best — mine were 20×26″) or crepe paper
  • Stapler
  • Scissors

How to make it:

  1. Stack four sheets of tissue paper and fold them in half lengthwise.

  3. Staple along the folded edge to secure the layers.
  4. Starting at the bottom, cut diagonal slits from the outer edge toward the stapled fold. Continue cutting upward until your diagonal reaches the top folded edge. Vary the lengths of the cuts for a more dynamic, textured look.

  6. Keep the small triangle leftover from your final cut if you want or discard it. Gently separate and fluff the fringe layers to create volume.

  8. Hang the garland by taping the stapled edge to the wall or surface. Fluff the fringe to hide the staples. For a layered backdrop, hang each color at a slightly different height to create depth.
