I have a fun week planned—my birthday is Friday, so I’m celebrating all week—and I’m kicking things off with a timely summer project. With the Fourth of July just around the corner, I made these edible pinwheels using Airheads. They’re simple, festive, and perfect as a post-BBQ dessert or a sweet table accent at any summer party.
For this project I used Airheads Bites—tiny, chewy, colorful pieces that are ideal for making small edible decorations. They worked beautifully for these pinwheels, adding both color and a chewy center.
Supplies:
Airheads (full-size or classic bars)
Airheads Bites
Lollipop sticks
Rolling pin
Knife
Cutting board
Step 1: Heat an Airhead in the microwave for about eight seconds until it becomes soft and pliable. Roll it into a ball, then flatten the ball into a thin circle with a rolling pin. Trim the rounded edges to form a neat square.
Step 2: Use a knife to cut slits from each corner toward the center, stopping about half an inch away so the center stays intact. Fold every other corner into the center and press gently to secure, creating the pinwheel shape.
Step 3: Prepare an Airheads Bite to serve as the center. Carefully remove a small portion of the outer coating on the back of the Bite so it will adhere. Roll a scrap piece of Airhead into a small plug and press it into the hole you created on the Bite to give it something to stick to.
Step 4: Press the Airheads Bite firmly into the center of the pinwheel to secure it. Flip the pinwheel over and lay a lollipop stick along the back. Use another small scrap of Airhead to press over the back, anchoring the stick in place so the pinwheel sits sturdily on the handle.
These edible pinwheels look great popped into cupcakes, placed on dessert platters, or used as festive toppers for individual servings. They’re quick to make, visually appealing, and perfect for adding a playful, patriotic touch to your Fourth of July spread or any summer gathering.
