Most Valuable Piece of Mom Advice You Ever Got?

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching — my second one already. Time really flies. At a recent baby shower we were asked to share the single best piece of mom advice for the mama-to-be, and it made me reflect on the many opinions moms receive and the handful that actually matter. I want to share a couple of favorite pieces of advice I’ve gathered: one from before I became a mom and one after. I’d love to hear yours, too.

I’m partnering with Sephora for this post because they have thoughtful gift sets that feel more personal than the usual flowers or chocolates. One of my favorites is the Sephora Favorites Kit Deluxe Perfume Sampler: it offers ten mini versions of best-selling perfumes so Mom can try a variety and choose a favorite. The box even includes a certificate to redeem a full-size bottle of her top pick — such a fun and practical gift. Full disclosure: my mom and I share tastes in many things, including perfume, so this sampler is also a sneaky way for me to figure out which scent I’ll wear next.

When I asked my mom what her number-one piece of parenting advice is, she answered simply: “Always make sure your child knows you love them and be there for them — in good times and bad.” That sentiment truly defines her. Another line she often shares (and one I heard from a friend’s mom) is: “Give your kids roots and wings.” I love that image — provide a strong foundation and unwavering support, then encourage them to grow and follow their own paths. Now that my siblings and I live across the country, she jokes that maybe she gave us “too big” wings.

Since we brought our son Arlo home, the most repeated advice from fellow moms has been: “You do you.” No two moms, kids, or families are the same. Trust your instincts and choose what works for your family. I remind myself of this whenever I second-guess a decision or fall into that comparison trap. It’s the truest lesson I’ve learned so far in motherhood.

What’s the best piece of parenting advice you’ve received? Or, if you aren’t a parent yet, what meaningful guidance did a parent or caregiver give you? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

If you still need a gift for a mom, friend, or special woman in your life this weekend, consider shopping a perfume sampler or another thoughtful set. It’s a lovely way to help someone treat themselves — they deserve it.
