Happy June and happy Donut Week! June is the perfect month — it kicks off summer, it’s my birthday month, and it includes National Donut Day. This year National Donut Day falls on Friday, June 6th, so I’m celebrating with donut-themed projects all week, ending with a big donut giveaway. To get things started I transformed a simple straw floppy hat into a donut-inspired summer accessory. It was quick, playful, and the perfect way to honor the holiday.

Ready to make one? Here’s what I used and how I did it.

Supplies:
– Straw floppy hat (I bought a plain one and removed any decoration)
– Fabric-safe craft paint in a frosting color (I used a pale pink shade)
– A few paint colors for sprinkles
– Paint brushes
Instructions:
1. Protect your work surface with paper or a drop cloth. Place the hat on a flat surface where it can dry undisturbed.
2. Using your frosting-colored fabric paint, paint the rim of the hat to form the “frosting.” Leave a thin unpainted border at the outer edge so the straw shows through slightly. Aim for an even coat without layering on too much paint to avoid seepage through the straw.
3. Allow the frosting base to dry completely.
4. Freehand paint sprinkles across the frosted area. I started with one sprinkle color, placing shapes randomly around the hat, then repeated with the other colors until the look felt balanced.
5. Let everything dry thoroughly before wearing. That’s it — your donut floppy hat is ready!

A quick note: the paint I used stayed flexible, so the hat remained floppy and wearable just like before. The paint moves with the straw instead of cracking or stiffening the brim.

I’m borderline obsessed with a mint wall we found that pairs perfectly with this hat — now I’m tempted to be known for a giant donut hat instead of a bow. I haven’t taken it off since I finished it! Check back tomorrow for another donut-inspired DIY project.
