This tutorial shows how to sew a giant plush cactus — a fun, forgiving project that makes an adorable accent for a nursery, bedroom, or living space. It’s ideal for anyone who likes the look of plants but not the upkeep. The finished cactus can be made at any scale; the example here is about five feet tall, but you can easily adapt the pattern to a smaller height.

DIY Giant Plush Cactus
Total Time: 2–3 Hours
Supplies
- Four yards of green felt
- White felt (or another color to match your planter)
- Sewing machine
- Green thread
- Hand-sewing needle
- Polyester stuffing
- Dowel (cut to the height of your finished cactus)
- Terracotta pot (just large enough for the finished cactus base)
- Hot glue gun
- Tall basket or decorative planter
Directions
1. Using the diagram above as a guide, cut these pieces from green felt: 6 large body panels, 2 medium curved arm pieces, 2 medium straight arm pieces, 2 small curved arm pieces, and 2 small straight arm pieces.
2. Pair the body panels and sew two pieces together along one edge. Repeat to create three sewn pairs.
3. Sew the three pairs together to form the cactus body. For a rugged, stitched look, sew with the seam allowances on the outside.
4. With the cactus body inverted, insert the dowel through the center from the top. Stuff the body firmly and evenly so it will hold the arms and remain stable on the dowel. Having a helper for this step makes it easier.
5. Construct the arms the same way: sew each curved piece to its matching straight piece, creating pairs for each arm.
6. Sew each arm pair together, trim any extra felt, and stuff the arms firmly.
7. Hand-stitch each arm to the cactus body. Use a slip stitch to secure the base of the arm all the way around, then add a few reinforcing stitches where the arm’s inner curve meets the body so the arm stands up straighter.
8. Hot-glue the bottom of the dowel into the terracotta pot so it’s anchored.
9. Place the pot inside your decorative basket or planter. If needed, stuff felt or other filler around the pot to keep it from shifting. Cut a circle from white (or colored) felt to fit inside the planter, then cut a slit and central hole to fit around the cactus stem. Glue or stitch that felt to finish the top of the planter neatly.
