Make Donut Stools: Step-by-Step DIY Guide for Stylish Seating

DIY Donut Stools
These donut stools have finally arrived! I first shared photos of them on Studio DIY months ago, and many of you asked for a full tutorial. They’re one of my favorite studio pieces and surprisingly simple to make. With a Cricut cutting machine and some patience, you can create colorful, frosting-covered stools complete with sprinkles. Here’s how I made them and what you’ll need.

Supplies:
Cricut Explore™ or similar cutting machine
Vinyl in your choice of colors (I used teal, light green, blush, pink and yellow for the frosting and a caramel tone for the donut, plus assorted colors for sprinkles)
Round stools (I used simple Ikea round stools)

Instructions:
1. Open the donut project in your Cricut design software and cut the donut base, frosting top, and sprinkles from adhesive vinyl. Choose colors that match your vision—soft pastels or bright candy tones both work great.
2. Begin with the donut base. Peel only the edge of the backing away from the vinyl so the adhesive is slightly exposed. Position the exposed edge on the center of the stool top to anchor the piece.
3. With the edge secured, slowly pull the backing off from underneath while using your free hand to smooth the vinyl onto the curved surface. Take your time to avoid air bubbles.
4. Repeat the same process with the frosting layer: peel a small edge of backing, align the frosting shape over the donut, adhere the exposed edge, and gently remove the backing while smoothing the vinyl into place.
5. Work slowly and carefully, smoothing as you go so the vinyl conforms to the rounded seat. Precision at each step ensures a clean finish.
6. Finally, apply the sprinkles one at a time. Peel each sprinkle off its backing and press it into place to create the scattered topping effect.

These vinyl-covered donut stools are playful and durable, perfect for bakeries, playrooms, preschools, or any space that could use a pop of sugary fun. By using removable vinyl, you can update colors and patterns over time without damaging the stool surface.
