DIY Hot Chocolate Costume Ideas for Halloween and Cosplay

I’ve been saving foam rollers for a few costume seasons, planning to turn them into oversized marshmallows — and a DIY hot chocolate costume was the perfect project. This costume is quick to assemble and makes a charming duo or family look: one person as the mug and a partner or child bundled up in cozy clothes as the hot chocolate’s happy recipient. The giant foam marshmallows are the standout element and do most of the work to sell the concept.

DIY Hot Chocolate Costume

Total Time: 2 Hours

Supplies

  • 40 x 60″ sheet of cardboard (found at most art supply stores)
  • Pink wrapping paper or poster board to cover the mug
  • Pink poster board for the handle
  • Spray adhesive
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • About 2 yards of brown felt for the “hot chocolate” spill
  • Three 4″ x 36″ foam rollers for marshmallows
  • Box cutter or utility knife
  • Brown elastic for shoulder straps
  • Brown shirt or dress to wear under the mug

Directions

  1. Cut each foam roller into roughly 4″ long sections to create marshmallows. Set aside.
  2. Bend the cardboard around your torso to determine the right width and height for the mug body, then trim the cardboard to that size.
  3. In a well-ventilated area, spray adhesive on the outside of the cardboard and smooth on the pink wrapping paper. Trim any excess for clean edges.
  4. Cut a handle shape from the pink poster board. Fold and glue about 1″ on each end to form tabs, then attach the handle securely to the mug body.
  5. Roll the brown felt into a loose tube and hot glue it around the top edge of the mug so it appears to be spilling over. Keep the felt placement slightly uneven to mimic flowing hot chocolate.
  6. Hot glue the foam “marshmallows” onto the felt spill, arranging them so they look casually piled on top.
  7. Attach two lengths of elastic to the front and back interior of the mug as shoulder straps. Adjust lengths to fit the wearer comfortably.
  8. Dress in a brown shirt or dress under the mug and slip the straps over your shoulders. Make any final trim or glue adjustments for comfort and appearance.
